One of the simplest and most inexpensive way to improve your smile and gain a lighter, brighter, more friendly smile is to undergo a teeth whitening treatment with your cosmetic dentist. Teeth whitening makes use of a hydrogen peroxide based gel that works to gently bleach out stains and remove imperfections from the tooth enamel.
Teeth can be stained by smoking, red wine, curry, colourful foods, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee and pretty much any other food or drink containing colour. Stained teeth do not look good and can really lower people’s self-esteem and make them reluctant to smile. This can have an impact on many areas of their life and can make them be seen to be unfriendly or shy.
Teeth whitening can be a real confidence booster for people who have stained or discoloured teeth. not only is the treatment fast, it also is good value – usually only around £500 for a full teeth whitening treatment. Teeth whitening is permanent and only requires topping up once a year or so to maintain the beautiful white appearance.
There are two methods of teeth whitening treatment; laser whitening and tray whitening.
Tray whitening is carried out at home after the cosmetic dentist has made the patient two trays (moulds of their upper and lower teeth). The patient fills the trays with whitening gel containing the active ingredient hydrogen peroxide and wears them overnight every night for a period of 2 weeks. After which time a white, bright smile will have been achieved.
The second method of teeth whitening is laser whitening; this is carried out in the dental surgery and involves the use of a laser. Whitening gel is applied to the patient’s teeth and mouth clamps are used to hold the patients lips and cheeks away from the teeth. The whitening gel included hydrogen peroxide and when a laser is shone at it, it activates the hydrogen peroxide causing stains and discolorations to be removed from the patients teeth.
Many people have undergone whitening treatment including celebrities, actors, musicians and the like but it is not just for famous people. Teeth whitening started in America and has recently spread to the UK. Now nearly all cosmetic dentists offer teeth whitening treatment and many people in the UK have undergone teeth whitening.
To further enhance the confidence of the patient, teeth whitening may also be used alongside other cosmetic treatments such as veneers, crowns or composite bonding. When multiple cosmetic treatments are used together it is often referred to as a ‘smile makeover’. Smile makeovers can greatly help people with bad teeth to feel more confident and to smile more. It is amazing how much of a difference it can make to people’s perception of themselves after they have had their teeth sorted out.
